They were really underrated until the stance community got their hands on them

Don’t get the 528e, it’s a gutless wonder. If you’re ever shopping for one, get a 535i.
Also. this was when BMW was switching over their paint process. The clear coat was crap.

Alright, pre-1985 is early model, post 1985 is late model. I would only look for ones with the M30 if you’re in North America, so 533i if you want an early (lighter) or 535i if you want late. I also highly recommend it with a manual transmission, an M30 with a 5 speed is one of the best things in life, which is why I’m buying an E24 with that combination this week. The 3.2 in the 533 is higher compression, has a lighter flywheel, and a higher top speed. The 3.4 in the 535 is torquier, happier with lower grade gas than the 3.2, but less top end power. Bilstein sport shocks, and stock springs with a coup and s half cut out is a good budget setup, and their shock towers like to rust, along with the rockers, and fenders. Sport recaros are more desirable but the comfort seats are seriously comfortable while still having good bolstering. The G260/265 gearbox is bulletproof, and if you like longer throws like me, is basically perfect. The diffs are also bulletproof, I’ve heard of people running in the neighborhood of 400tq through them no problem. Also you can turbo m30s mildly on stock internals. All in all, if you don’t mind the gas guzzling nature of a motor that originated in the 60s, they’re a perfect combination of comfort, speed, style, and practicality if you find a good one.
Tl; dr, they cool, buy one

Awesome, thanks for the advice!
Just two questions.
1. Do you think that being collectible is probable?
2. Did they come with a built in car phone at all?
Chances are, the only things I’d want to do are fog lights and that’s about it.

The M5 is already quite collectible, so I could see the lesser models becoming more valuable as well. A well sorted 535is or M535i is already getting up there in value.
I think some did? I'm not sure, but I think it was an option for any BMW once they started offering them. I've personally only seen them in 6, 7, and 8 series though
